BYOD FAQs
BYOD
Bring Your Own Device (often shortened to BYOD) refers to a program where students bring their own technology device 'from home' for their education journey. Often schools may recommend that the device has a few preferred specifications, or they may request specific devices or models.
Schools may select specific devices, or recommend preferred specifications for the devices that students use for their education journey. It is important that students and parents are aware of these specifications when selecting a suitable device for educational use. If you're unsure, we recommend checking in with your school prior to purchasing.
General Tech
There is no specified time in which a device will be expected to last - much depends on how it is treated during its life and its capability matching to the expectation of the user. It's important to note that as a student's school journey progresses, the required performance of the device will often increase. When considering your purchase, it's worth thinking about specifications that might be required in future years. Typically though, devices may be refreshed once or twice throughout a high school journey.
RAM, or Random Access Memory, is the storage within your computer that houses temporary files actively being worked on. The more RAM your computer has, the more its processor can do at any one time, meaning students will be able to multi-task effectively while running more intensive programs.
Storage is where all the files are kept and can take two forms: HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and SSD (Solid State Drives). HDD’s provide for larger capacity, however with portability a key requirement for a BYOD device, SSD’s are a good fit for students as they have no moving parts. This means they are more durable, lighter and faster.

School specifications
We have scanned the websites of thousands of high schools in Australia to find your high school's latest BYOD specifications. We have translated these specifications to provide the 3 best options for your high school, based on our range. We have also been in contact with some Australian high schools via phone and email to ensure that the specifications we are using are up to date. Where we were unable to source any BYOD information for your high school, we have suggested 3 of our most popular options that meet the typical BYOD benchmark specifications for Australian High Schools. If you're unsure, we recommend checking in with your school prior to purchasing.
Schools will usually provide information to parents in Term 3 and 4 around BYOD program requirements for the following school year (if applicable). We recommend checking with your school to confirm if your school has a BYOD program, and if so which year level/s this applies to.
