Meet Sierra, 10, Quinn, 9, and Kahu, 9, three upper primary students who enjoy making things at home. Construction kits are a big favourite, and Quinn rates himself “an expert, because I have some Vex sets at my house”.
We challenged them to make this STEM toy zip-flyer, following the detailed instructions which outline how to clip the 80-plus parts together. After a few false starts, there was good news – the team triumphed.
VEX Zip Flyer Construction Kit
The STEM Learning Toy
The VEX Zip Flyer Construction Kit is recommended for the age range of 8 and above. The hands-on learning set comes with everything kids need to create their own propeller launcher and is a clever introduction to construction, engineering concepts, and coding toys.
Once complete, the toy can shoot propellers up to 10 metres into the air with a simple zip-cord release, teaching kids about elevation and distance as they learn through play.

The Verdict
Sierra, Quinn and Kahu agreed parts of the zip flyer kit were “pretty hard”, but also “fun and exciting” and something they’d enjoy doing again. The trio also had fun taking the launcher outside to see how far the propeller could go. “I never knew it would go that high,” said Sierra.
