Felt sheets can be transformed in many different ways using basic tools like glue and scissors, and with so many bright colours to choose from, this tactile and sensory craft staple will easily spark your child’s creativity. What’s more, these fun felt crafts projects will hone kids’ fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and dexterity, while delivering endless hours of entertainment (and maybe just a little mess!). Younger ones, especially those under 5, may need some grown up supervision or help when using a glue gun or pointy scissors.

Felt All Seasons Tree

A tactile tree is the perfect felt craft project for kids.

Seasons are a lovely way for children to track the year. By making their own felt tree base, then adding on temporary accessories like leaves, flowers, rain and branches, they can recreate their garden-scape over and over depending on the season, weather or their mood. With plenty of scissor-work needed for this felt crafts project, little ones will get a chance to flex those coordination skills and practise concentration, too.

Step 1: Start with a blank sheet of felt, which will become the base for this project. A white or pale blue colour creates a clean backdrop to any season.

Step 2: Cut out a tree trunk from brown felt, making some long branches that can be decorated with different kinds of leaves, flowers and fruit.

Step 3: Place your tree trunk onto your backdrop. Use glue to stick just the middle of the trunk down. That way you can change the scene behind the base of the trunk and branches, but the tree itself won’t move around.

Step 4: Cut out some felt to become the ground of the scene. Green works well for most seasons as it acts like a grassy base.

Step 5: Start cutting out all your seasonal decorations. Summer might have big green bushy leaves and apples. Think bright green budding leaves and flowers for spring. Decorate autumn with beautiful orange, red and brown leaves and consider extra branches, raindrops and storm clouds for winter.

Step 6: Play with the seasons, changing the tree depending on the time of year you want to create. You can store your tree base and seasonal accessories in a large zip lock bag or document wallet.

What You’ll Need

Using just felt, glue and scissors you can create a world of felt crafts projects for kids.

Felt Hand Puppets

With glue, felt and scissors your kids can take on this easy felt crafts project.

A childhood classic, a hand puppet is a felt craft rite of passage, and a perfect, easy winter craft project for kids. Younger children may need a little help with creating the basic outline in this wonderful sensory project. Starting with a recognisable shape like a bear or ghost is a smart idea. Bigger kids will have fun whipping up anything from a puppy to a parrot, with all the trimmings.

Step 1: Take a piece of felt and fold it in half. A piece of white felt works well as the base for a black and white puppy puppet.

Step 2: Keeping the sheet folded, cut out the shape of the puppy’s head and body, without the ears. By having the felt folded, you will end up with two identical felt shapes for the front and back of the puppet.

Step 3: Add some warm glue around the edges of one piece. Be sure to keep the straight line at the bottom of the felt free from glue, as this is where your hand will slide in.

Step 4: Cut out ears, eyes, a nose and some extra pieces in random shapes and sizes from black felt – these will make the extra patches of colour on the puppy’s body.

Step 5: Using warm glue, add all the cute features to the front of your puppet. All that is left to do is to pop your hand in and put on a show.

Felt Pouch With Hidden Surprise

Soft felt sheets are a good base for a little pouch or bag. Make it even more fun by hiding a little surprise inside. Why not make a little BFF felt charm to share with a friend, or give the pouch a seaside theme with a shell on top and a hidden crab inside?

Step 1: Cut a sheet of coloured felt in half, so you end up with a nice long strip. Trim about a third off one end and you’ll have enough felt to make a mini bag.

Step 2: Fold the strip, pulling the bottom piece up to three-quarters of the way, so there is a bit left to fold down over the top, making a satchel-like shape.

Step 3: Once you’re happy with the folds, add some warm glue to the edges of the bottom sections of the strip, then refold and push down until the glue on the edges holds to make the pocket. Press along the top fold firmly to make the flap that closes over the pocket.

Step 4: Take some more sheets of different coloured felt to create a BFF charm: make a heart shape, add a felt message, then cut it in half, best-friends-forever style. You can also make any other cute shapes and designs to add to the front of the bag.

Step 5: Using the pointy end of your scissors, make two little holes in the top outer corners of the bag, a little way in from each edge. Cut a length of string to weave through the holes. Tie a knot at one end, thread the string through one hole from the inside of the bag, outwards then over and through into the hole on the other side. Leaving enough string to make a handle, tie another knot at this end so that it is on the inside of the bag.

Step 6: Finish by gluing on the outer accessories and popping your BFF charm inside the bag, to surprise and share with a friend.

What You’ll Need

The best thing about this fun felt crafts project is the hidden surprise within.

Felt Hero Mask

Looking for easy felt crafts project for kids? This fun mask will hit the spot.

Felt is the ideal hero mask base as it’s soft and comfortable against young skin. With this easy felt craft project, kids can recreate their favourite superhero mask or make up their own using colours and shapes that best reflect their unique powers.

Step 1: Take a piece of felt and, using a pencil, draw your mask shape so it’s ready to cut. If you’re not sure what shape you would like your mask to be, try drawing it onto a piece of paper first, cutting it out, then using the paper cut-out to trace the shape onto the felt.

Step 2: Cut out the shape, following along the lines, until you have your mask. Push the pointy end of your scissors gently into the middle of the felt where the eyes need to be, then cut out the eye shape.

Step 3: Using different coloured felt, cut out the shapes and designs to decorate your mask. It could be lightning bolts, diamonds or even letters.

Step 4: Using warm glue, add your decorations to give your mask its unique personality.

Step 5: Using the tip of your scissors, pop a small hole on either side of the mask, ready to add elastic or string.

Step 6: Measure the elastic around your head then cut off the piece and thread each end through a hole on either side, adding knots. Finally, time to try it on and transform into Super You.
