Beauty and lifestyle stylist Iantha Yu is constantly taking photos and videos on her smartphone. She had been looking for a tool to help her keep a steady hand while shooting, so we asked her to review the DJI Smartphone Gimbal. These are the results…
Easy to Attach and Control
There’s a magnetic clamp at the back, and you just have to click [your phone] in place. It also comes with a tripod, a wrist strap for extra security and a USB charger. It feels really lightweight and easy to transport and looks so futuristic. The gimbal works with most smartphones and it can even support bigger devices, like my Samsung Galaxy S21+. All the controls are in the grip, so you can play, record and move the joystick around – I found it so easy..

Hands-free Ability
My favourite feature is the track sensor which follows your movements. If you’re in front of it, you can go left or right and it moves with you; you don’t have to use your hands to control the device. That makes it great for filming things like a make-up tutorial where you need to have a hands-free experience. There’s also Gesture Control for when you want to jump in the photo – all you need to do is hold out your palm in front of the camera and wave.

Easy-to-edit Video Functions
The Hyperlapse function is really great. It lets you take a longer video, then speeds it up for you so it looks like everything is in fast motion. There’s an in-built function called Story Mode, which suggests footage templates to make videos more interesting and dynamic. You can even edit your video in the DJI Mimo app, which guides you through the process.
The Verdict
It’s really versatile, great for capturing different types of footage. You do need to set aside a bit of time to learn how to use the device but after that, you’re all good. I highly recommend it. 7/10.
