What’s the best printer paper?

What is gsm? Is bigger always better?

Also known as “grammage,” gsm means “grams per square metre.” This is a measure of how thick and heavy paper is. Generally speaking, the higher the gsm, the higher the perceived quality of the paper. Standard paper used in most printers and for most documents is 80gsm, although sometimes 70gsm paper is used because it’s lighter and less expensive—but less durable. Higher gsm paper is often used in brochures and business cards, or in professional printing.

While higher gsm paper is usually better quality, it’s not necessary, cost-effective, or even practical to use it for everything. A standard 80gsm sheet of paper is effective for most purposes, although sometimes it can be worth going just a little higher for a premium feel.
